What better way to enjoy the glory of Spring than to take in the charm of Boston's North End, enjoy a sumptuous brunch buffet and see some fresh, yet classic Italian designs. Karim Mohammed, one of the Northeast's most talented producers, chose a selection of styles from various Italian designers and tapped the talents of top area models to capture the essence of Boston's oldest neighborhood at one of its finest eateries, Dolce Vita on Hanover Street. The clothes, a collection of modern classics, were generously loaned to the show by Estassi, Newbury Street's newest boutique. (12 Newbury street) For those not familiar, the North End of Boston has become a destination in and of itself. For all of Newbury Streets chic cafe's and stylish boutiques, the North End is home to some of America's finest restaurants, decadent bakeries and charming street festivals. It's easy to lounge away an afternoon sipping the foam off an authentic cappuccino as the sound of the Italian language fills the air, mixing with the fleeting aroma of a spicy pasta sauce. These tree lined streets see the influx of over a million tourists each summer who seek out the lively street fairs, usually named after a beloved patron saint. The tourists, whether from Idaho or just in from Somerville, patiently make their way down the crowded sidewalks to take in the sites or wait for a table at one of the many restaurants as the long time residents, many here for four or five generations, go about their daily lives. With the inevitable end of
the Big Dig, the North End will become more accessible, bringing with the
possibility of even more visitors and the danger of gentrification.
But with the resilient nature of the neighborhood, I see this bastion of
Italian charm holding it's own.
