Since the late sixties and early seventies the peasant shirt has been the uniform of choice of those on tour with the Grateful Dead and, later on, Phish.  Much to the dismay of these anti establishmentarian flower children, the peasant shirt has been embraced as the latest trend in high-end fashion.

These comfortable tops first gained the attention of the international fashion community when smaller designers introduced to small boutiques where they flew off the shelves and into the shopping bags of the chic elite.  Soon most every designer introduced similar garb into their own lines and big chain stores such as Macy’s, Filenes and JCPenney’s began stocking their racks with a wide array of colors and variations on the original.

The peasant shirt just might be a trend that lasts.  It’s comfortable, fun and quite versatile.  It goes great with jeans or summery skirts for Saturday afternoon or with a pair of sophisticated leather pants or hot skirt for a night out on the town.
